artists_beware @ 10:00pm: Update Regarding Opiumrevolution
Reference entry: community.livejournal.com/artists_beware/264018.htmlSo, as of the moment, this issue is still not resolved. My last return of contact from the seller was September 4th, the results being: "Hey Chester I wanna first apologize to you. My excuse for not mailing you your book or responding to your notes is honestly I took way more commissions than I could handle. Again sorry. It was not my intention to screw you over. See I took a bunch of commissions right before AC, some during AC, then still I had a couple people contact me after AC about commissions. The smart thing to do would have been to turn people away, but I still took them anyway. So that being said you can imagine I have alot of notes in my inbox to go over. PLUS also I've had a bunch of people noting me too about when their commission was going to get mailed out. That's why your notes prob got overlooked. Well like I said I don't wanna screw anyone over. So I'll do whatever it takes to make this right. Just verify that your address is correct and I'll mail your book to you" I responded confirming my address-And have heard nothing since. As Far as I can tell, she has been on since then, but has done no submissions. Any ideas?

fursuit @ 12:19am: How to: whiskers
So I'm sure many people here use the plastic line from weedeaters as whiskers. Well I've always had the problem of it being wound up and I never getting it to lay as flat as I want it (because it comes in spools). Well I experimented some and found a pretty simple fix to this problem. -Take a pot of water and boil it. -Cut it into the lengths you want and dip the whiskers into the boiling water. -Let them sit for a few seconds or so until they become pliable. -Once they become pliable bend them into the position you want using an oven mitt. Ta da! then you have non-crazy shaped whiskers!

I just finished up a cute doodle for Animecat's character "River" and her spiky friend. This is actually a nod back to my honeymoon. Michael and I went to an outdoor farmer's market, and ended up buying a huge pineapple. We didn't go back to the hotel for a while, so I ended up carrying my own spiky friend all over downtown Kona. *grins* This is one of my first cute or chibi style pieces. I rather like how it turned out. Enjoy! ~Shadow

furhideandbone @ 11:17pm: Allergic to my Furs?
Nobody remembers this, but waaaay back when I got my first box of dead stuff I sneezed uncontrollably when I opened them up. Back then I was like "oh hells no" and sold those tails quick, although now I'm kinda thankful because through buying and selling parts like that I've come across some great finds. Anyway, It was only when I was around them, so I figured I was allergic to them. It lessened when I kept them boxed up in the guest room, which I didn't go in very often, and then I got several items for myself (which didn't make me sneeze). Now my guest room has several boxes of fur stuff and some pelts laying here and there. Whenever I rearrange them, my eyes get watery and I sneeze afterward. I have noticed that when I wore my jaguar collar or when I hold my bobcat pelt, I'm fine, but when I mess around with fox stuff I get that allergic feeling. Is it possible that I'm allergic to foxes? I'm not allergic to my own dogs...then again I heard that once a fur is tanned it doesn't have the mites or dandruff or whatever that people are allergic to. also I've never been close enough to a live fox to know if I'd sneeze at it. :P Anyone else have this problem or an explanation?

furhideandbone @ 7:59pm: Just throwing this out there..
Making costumes and all I'm often on the hunt for horns and such to cast and mold. Does anyone have any cool matched sets that I could well.. borrow? >< Aside from paying shipping I'm not sure what I could offer in return. Perhaps a tail or pathtag or something. Currently actively looking for a Kudu set (or something similar) and I'd love a nice set of curled ram horns to duplicate. Though keep in mind I live in Canada. And I'm not sure what is and isn't allowed across. Like I said, just throwing it out there. If someone's got a large collection maybe we could work out a deal of some sort. An example set of antlers I molded, cast, and painted to be used on a costume

fursuit @ 5:58pm: German Sheppherd mutt
done in loving memory of his dog I added long fur to the face and neck to hide the connecttion of the fully articulated jaw, and did a shape of muted tan on the lower tummy ratther than the patch of maltball scattred color like on the real dog. otherwise i tried to stay as close to the real deal as i could. the mesh tear ducts are rather large but being black around the eyes i felt i could get away with it, it may be more visable this way but vision out this mask is quite excellent. hands and claws made by artslave (i am outsourcing because i am overbooked and it saves me a lot of time) ( Pictures )

So I've been working hard on this project for my work. Here's the head mostly done. I still need to put the back neck ruff on and I'm trying to decide whether or not to airbrush some. I think I might do whisker spots only. ( Otter! )

Actually it's been done for a while, I just haven't gotten around to posting the one picture that I have right now. I'm sure that some of you remember me talking about Darkness. Well, Darkness turned into Hodo the Demon of Misfortune. I know that the head is really wonky and I have plans to over haul it eventually but right now this is what it is. NOTE: Apparently I fail at making LJ cuts so the picture is somewhere in those 4 LJ cuts. Atleast it's in a cut though. fursuit @ 7:43pm: Dyeing fur
i remember alot of people asking if you could dye fur a while back. cant remember if anyone braught a product that dyes fur to our attention. but i just successfully dyed some DF/Fabric.com cream fur to a darker shade (the colour of the dye was a darker shade of cream) i didnt propperly dye it i just kind of put a tiny bit of dye in a cup with salt and cold water n stook some fur in there and it has defonatly dyed.. so the dye is called iDye poly, just incase anyone is interested. but i only dyed it to a darker shade im not sure if it would dye fur to any vivid colour.

fursuit @ 12:31pm: Questions about latex...
Having moved provinces recently, I need to go about finding new sources for supplies. In this case, latex. Everyone has mold builder (various brands) but the closest supplier of casting latex is several hours away. Because of the freezing temperatures I can't have latex shipped to me, so I'm wondering... Can mold builder successully be used for some parts? At least until I can get down to Calgary and get my greedy little paws on the real stuff. I'd purchased mold builder once by accident, and hated it. It was quite hard, not nearly as pliable and stretchy as the casting stuff. But was it a bad batch, or does it simply require a different method of use? Say, thin coats by brush instead of slush casting or something... The parts in question would be a little thick, prefferably 2 - 3 mm thickness all around. Or heck, if anyone is in the Edmonton area and knows a supplier, I'm all ears. :) Thanks!

artists_beware @ 1:41pm: EDIT to orginal wall
Edit. Insulting a persons typing is just as un cool and rude as someone who doesn't try. I don't type well, I'm sorry I have a learning disability that makes editing my own work atrocious at best. I don't bring it up too much because I find people can be very prejudicial and unnecessarily nasty. But this isn't the place to discuss the complexity of types of intelligence and perception. I'm sorry I ruffled so many english professors. So bear with me please. I've debated posting here for some time. It's easy to Get labeled whiny or demanding or misunderstood. This is a very touchy subject for many. For time line and details. ( takes a deep breath Probably too long didn't read. ) First commission was bought At MFF 06. Which I think was still held in November. Colored single character simple background. Nothing too fancy. To be honest I can't even remember the pose ideas Or the medium for coloring. Paid upfront. 35 USD Second was bought at AC 06 the Person who was still a friend at the time was suffering some fiscal issues and low sales, feeling sorry I said Well okay you still gotta do my color work but sure. Just draw me up a single character inked. For approx 25 USD. I say the total is 80 bucks because of the USD to Canadian Dollar exchange rates are close. At one point I think they gave a few refunds but I was not contacted. And at the time of the refunds had a deadline. I did not find out until it was too late. Reading how the person was in financial woe. I felt sorry for them. So I did not make much a fuss then. I mean hard times happen to everyone. I then simply said. If it takes you a few months up to year to do It I'm okay as long as you do it. One other Time I was put on the " List" But with no indication how long this list was or a time line. Over the years I've sent notes and once asked them at a con if they would do it. I got a beat around the bush reply. I usually waste little time telling people how I feel. But when it comes to furry art I've learned the moment you call out a popular artist for owed artwork. Or disrupt a popular furs good name in ANY WAY You get smashed down hard by them and their fans. It can make things difficult for you. Buying and selling art seems simple. But given how popular this group is it's a complex issue. Subject to interpretations and many differing opinions. I'm very patient when it comes to Commissions. Jobs happen life happens. Naturally life does come first but where do we draw the lines? Over a year and It starts to get tiresome. Perhaps I sound impatient now, but for what I paid I think I should have been given something. And people are right. I am somewhat angry/fustrated. When I see someone offering sales and selling new commissions and completing them before my pre paid work back from 06 hasn't been done. I'd like to think my frustration is more then justified after this long a time has passed. Another reason I'm avoiding too much discussion face to face is the person recently moved to my area. From across the country. And is currently dating one of my good friends. People are very inclined to defend their Significant other despite a wrong doing And to be honest I'd like to keep that friendship in tact. I cant just stop a social game night And go So hey X what about my commissions you've owed me? * cue awkward silence and drama* I'm sort of looking for the right wording to say to this person. I've been tempted to out their name but I'm hoping for a more peaceful end. Thanks for the help and imput earlier. Thank you.

artists_beware @ 9:25pm: I need advice...
So, I'm not going to name names yet because this particular commissioner has always paid in the past... but this time... :/ In mid August I was commissioned by someone who has commissioned me before. She always paid in full and reliably, and this time requested a rush order. I agreed, but because she does not use Paypal I started on the commission immediately to get it done by when we agreed rather than wait for payment to arrive (although this is literally the only case in which I've done this. I never work on a plushie at ALL unless I at least have a deposit, but she had been reliable in the past.) I had the plushie done by the due date and emailed her a number of times, but she did not reply. Finally, by the end of the month she did, stating that she had been busy. She requested a couple changes (which would have been a piece of cake to make, but I asked for clarification on them because they were a little unclear) and she asked for my address. :/ Well, she didn't reply until the end of September. She asked if she could send half now and half later since she had to buy something for her cat's flea medication recently. She said I didn't have to send anything until it was paid in full (I wouldn't anyway) and I said that was fine and everything. Once again, she didn't respond, this time until mid October. This time stating that her dog had hip problems and she couldn't afford to pay me but would let me know when she could. I said okay. Whatever, although getting sort of annoyed because it's been months now -- no money to show for it at all, I pushed back my normal commissions to work on hers as a rush order, etc. I emailed her again this week and I still haven't gotten a reply. I don't know what to do at this point. :/ Like I said, she's been reliable in the past, so I don't want to get too angry or anything and she has generally been really nice but... this is getting kind of silly.

fursuit @ 10:45am: Sock Paw Sketch
A few days ago I made a sketch of how I want the feet for my partial suit to look. I spent about 15 minutes on the drawing, and a couple failing to improve it on Photoshop. While I was sketching, I realized that it would probably be easier to cut down to three fingers and a thumb than do the whole five fingers thing. Naturally this will be easier with the feet where I won't have my toes in the fingers, and I need to look up how people do the three finger route for hands. Especially considering one of my ideas for arms included using elbow-length women's formal gloves for the insides. So, here's my sketch, also posted on my DeviantArt page, where I'm known as Zhale. ( Cut for Picture Size )
